I started learning chinese several years ago, and didn't make a whole lot of progress until recently. I was using Teach yourself Beginners Chinese for a long time which is a very good book, but eventually I decided to enrol in a course and do things properly. I'm now studying at SOAS on their Beginners Chinese Language course, which is good fun but a little intense. To give you some idea of how difficult it is, half the group had dropped out after the first four weeks! It's a pretty expensive option (I'm paying £280 per 12-week term), but if you're serious about learning a language it's money well spent.
